Here's a perfect example of totally unnecessary gruesome carnage, a slaughter in the name of a rite of passage - yes, it's yet another travesty that is excused in the name of cultural tradition:

Every year, on the Faroe Islands in an atmosphere of festival, the Calderon dolphin, as well as other types of dolphins and whales in danger of extinction are variously bludgeoned and stabbed.

This is purportedly to make men of young males.

The sea turns red for days as they bleed to death in the hundreds, crying in their pain.
