Just last night eldest daughter was berating me because my blog is too depressing. She said, we're all going to die anyway, but the stars and moon will still be here, so I should post happy things and pictures of our pets.

I wish I could look at it that way! But I remember when the world was a beautiful place, full of promise. I could plant a tree or a rose and watch it grow. I could imagine my children having long, happy, productive lives. I looked forward to having grandchildren someday.

Maybe a few will make it. But rising seas are a done deal - the glaciers and ice caps will not stop melting for centuries - meaning massive dislocation for many millions of people and, unless miraculously the best instincts prevail, that could lead to worldwide famine and vicious conflicts. Acidified oceans, the death of coral reefs, and the wholesale collapse of the food chain is a done deal as well.

It remains to be seen what can be salvaged.

Thanks for reading.Gail Zawackihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01800944469843206253noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5549306427964459740.post-12862848275770003702009-12-15T07:32:19.539-05:002009-12-15T07:32:19.539-05:00We really are trashing the planet in a big way, ar...We really are trashing the planet in a big way, aren't we? I read a fascinating book by Bill Bryson about a walk along the Appalachian Trail, and he echoed the sentiments in your post about the ineptitude (or worse) of the organisations which are supposed to be protecting forests. If the trees are dying then that's going to have a big impact on the ability of the natural world to absorb our CO2.

I keep being reminded of a scene from a Terminator film - I think it was Terminator 2 - in which the young John Connor looks at kids having a play gunfight and says:

"We're not going to make it, are we?"

I'm beginning to share that sense of foreboding.Icarusnoreply@blogger.com
