The other greenhouse gases

On Sunday afternoon, October 25, I watched the Tewksbury Foot Bassets take off for the hunt, from an orchard in the middle of Oldwick village.

The fruit trees are exhibiting strange configurations.
The pear trees look sickly.
And they are being smothered by the creeping lichen that is to be found on many other species of tree.
There is the greyish type, that almost has petals - and also this particularly objectionable color of hideous green.
Adjacent to the orchard was this brown stand of brushy growth. I don't know what it is, but I sincerely doubt it should be brown, since we haven't had a frost yet. It reveals interesting layers of dieback.
The topmost oldest foliage is the most brown.
Closer to the ground, where newer growth has spurted up, has some green.
And the higher up you go, the more damaged the leaves are until they are totally dead.

Apple trees in the orchard are not faring well, either, and the distant hills are dun and drab.

The tree below is a typical example of later, rapid growth atop more damaged, older leaves from earlier in the season.
Click on it, and the disparity becomes apparent.
Off go the hounds, in pursuit of hare, following the huntsman's horn.

Now, back to reality.

One of the authors of this research as reported in a
Science Daily article, Dr. Sandy Jackson of UC Berkeley, was kind enough to forward this Royal Society report to me.

Below are the conclusions for the section on vegetation, which starts on page 75. It seems like every other paragraph says something along the lines of "more study is needed" and "observed impacts were worse than predicted by the models."

8.5 Conclusions


Terrestrial vegetation is directly impacted by ground-level O3, although there are large differences in plant sensitivity both within and between species. O3 has direct effects on leaf structure and physiology and causes visible leaf damage and reductions in growth and yield in sensitive plant species. These may lead to long-term effects on ecosystem structure and function.


The choice of exposure index can dramatically alter model predictions of O3 impacts. In the European region the application of a deposition flux-based approach has demonstrated a more even distribution of impact than other models. This approach provides a stronger mechanistic basis for assessing O3 impacts, especially in the context of long-term environmental change.


Assessment of O3 effects on ecosystems should consider interactions between concentrations of O3, CO2 and other factors, such as climate change and N deposition. In particular, the future impacts of O3 should be considered alongside those of increasing CO2 concentrations as the predicted benefits of increased CO2 concentrations in terms of increased carbon storage and increased crop yields will be offset or lost if O3 concentrations increase sufficiently. Detrimental effects of O3 on terrestrial carbon uptake will lead to more anthropogenic CO2 accumulation in the atmosphere and an indirect radiative forcing of climate change that adds significantly to the direct O3 forcing, increasing the importance of O3 as a driver of climate change.


Global yields of staple crops are already reduced as a consequence of current O3 exposure.


The impact of O3 on crop production may increase over the next few decades in some rapidly developing regions, especially without the full implementation of current legislation to reduce emissions. Significantly increased impacts of O3 are projected in South Asia where there is evidence both of substantial impacts on yield of current O3 levels and that the local sensitivity of crops may be greater than in North America or Europe. In South Asia, and other developing regions, O3 could present a significant threat to national food security, although it has received much less recognition than the impacts of climate change.


Evidence suggests that wild plant species in Europe and North America can be as sensitive to O3 as the most sensitive crop species, but very few studies have assessed the long- term effects of O3 on biodiversity or ecosystem services. An analysis of O3 effects on global plant productivity over the 21st century shows that significant impacts on production, and hence potentially on ecosystem function and biodiversity, are predicted to occur under a high emission SRES A2 scenario in major eco-regions of high conservation priority, in Latin America, Asia and Africa, as well as in parts of Europe and North America. The long-term effects of O3 on biodiversity are particularly uncertain at lower latitudes where almost no research has been undertaken.


Marketplace, a radio show aired on NPR, had a story about pine bark beetle, and this is what I wrote them, about that:

I have a message for Kai Ryssdal, Sam Eaton, and Sarah Gardner regarding the story that aired about pine bark beetle.

Briefly, most people are missing the boat. It isn't CO2 (long slow killer that it is, from warming) but rather, the "other" greenhouse gases that are killing trees - emissions that morph into ozone and peroxyacetyl nitrates from gasoline and ethanol, respectively.

These are known toxins to vegetation and they are directly killing trees in many regions, by interfering with the ability of foliage to photosynthesize and produce chlorophyll, as well as leading to worse insect and disease problems.

Very few academics are investigating this connection. The first reporters to break this story will become famous - consider the implications of a world without nuts, fruit orchards, maple syrup, lumber, shade and habitat for so many other species.

And that's without even mentioning widespread failure of annual crops, leading to famine. If we don't stop burning fossil and biofuels, and soon, we are going to cause ecosystem collapse and mass extinctions.

Furthermore, these volatile organic compounds, which do not persist for years like CO2 but can travel long distances, are dangerous for people, and are directly responsible for cancers, emphysema, and asthma.

This is a neglected topic, because the only way to fix it is to completely switch over to clean, renewable energy, and soon. As already demonstrated in the areas that are receiving these greenhouse pollutants from California's 8-lane freeways, and visible if ignored along the Eastern Seaboard, a conversion is urgently required to avoid the worst irreversible consequences.

Aida

On Saturday, Doc took us to a matinee of Aida, at the Metropolitan Opera. It happened to coincide with the date, October 24, for international climate action set by 350.org. Rather than miss the opera to attend an event, I decided at the last minute to make my own. So, I had some flyers printed up about the perils of climate change, and distributed them on the Lincoln Center Plaza before the performance.

I was promptly informed by a policeman that I was permitted to do no such thing; so instead, I haunted the sidewalk out front and had only one refusal, from a gentleman who claimed he's "hopeless" when it comes to clean energy, because he works for the US Chamber of Commerce!

Ha ha, I said, you guys really got punked this week, didn't you!? And to give him credit, he laughed rather sheepishly. Here is background if you missed the story!

Aida ends when the star-crossed lovers - she a princess of Ethiopia, and Radames, the highest military leader of Egypt - give up their lives rather than betray their respective country's animosity, led not inconsequentially, by the high priests (see the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster for more details on that sort of idiocy). Actually, Aida has an incredibly beautiful aria in Act 4 about her desire to go back to Ethiopia, a land of bounty and beauty, a wealth of ecological diversity, a glorious preserve of nature.

Irony, anyone?

In the last act, the doomed pair sing in an achingly touching duo, weeping in poetic grief and despair, when they are entombed together, literally buried alive, beneath the weight of their society's ignorance, hate, stupidity, and irrationality.

Oh, could that be some kind of prophetic presage?


Doc doesn't like the whole negativity thing - in fact he hated the ocean video when I showed it to him - (and I didn't even bother to point out that the main take-away point, only briefly touched upon in the narration, is that most of the oxygen people breathe is produced by life in the oceans!) - but in the end, he helped to hand out the leaflets. Thanks, Doc! He's wearing his cool Italian bike-racing glasses - hey, not too shabby to be a mad bicyclist at 82.

Last week, on Wednesday, October 21, I had the pleasure to visit another very special arboretum. Buck Gardens was donated to the public by a very prominent family because it is a very special location, comprising a deep valley which was forged eons ago by a glacier. It is a small park that has very steep rock walls, and a tiny stream cutting through the center. Although not particularly extensive, it is sweet. The staff and volunteers have created and maintained a spectacular series of gardens in the ravine, which is bordered by mature tree stands and all sorts of flowering shrubs. Probably the most unique aspect is the rock gardens, with plants that somehow cling to the exposed stone, and are intricately delicate and gorgeously robust.

When my kids were enrolled in their school nearby - and when they were older and took the train to a proximate station - I often walked these paths when I arrived a bit too early for pickup. So I have seen this park evolve over almost a thirty year period of time. It has matured in the most spectacular way...but it's been at least 5 years since I stopped by, after my youngest graduated high school.

When I wandered over last Wednesday, I expected that in the lateness of the season, I wouldn't find anything surprising or notable. But the evidence of decline was so enormous, I scarcely know how to begin to organize all the photographs, or explain what the evidence portrays. In fact I've been quite stymied for several days. There's just too much!

Aauuggh.

So this is going to be a hodge-podge probably without much logical progression. It's too sad, and I'm too overwhelmed, to try to be coherent.

Therefore what follows is something resembling what my beloved college literature professor at UC Santa Cruz, who delved deliciously into Thomas Mann, Dostoevsky, Orwell, Hemingway, Fitzgerald and Nabokov, among more obscure others, liked to call a good novel, "a loose and baggy monster."

The leaves of this young holly seedling should be uniformly dark and solid green - instead they reveal bleaching of color, which means their ability to photosynthesize and produce chlorophyll has been compromised. Since every other leaf, of every tree, shrub, annual perennial AND aquatic, plus conifer needles, exhibit the same problem, I think it's safe to assume that the cause can be attributed to the one commonality they share - that would be the composition of the atmosphere.
Keeping in mind that we have yet to experience frost, there is no reason for this leaf to be blackened.
Here is the pretty flower above connected to the leaf. I'm not quite sure what it is, so I don't know if it is blooming at the appropriate time or not.

The wild asters are supposed to be blooming now, and they are quite pretty.
But their leaves don't look so good.
Here is a path through the gardens - it is covered in brown leaves. It amazes me that no one seems to remember that even the leaves on the ground should be brightly colored, in mid October.
Many branches are already bare, and those that have leaves are not richly saturated red and gold and orange, but all are tinged with burnt edges, and the overall effect is muddy.
This is a toad lily.
The best color to be found is yellow. It was such an achingly glorious afternoon, with a sky of sapphire and a bright sun that made the leaves sparkle.
Because the park has very steep slopes these charming steps have been installed.
Here is a spring beauty, blooming (but barely) in the fall!
The park has many azaleas, which appear to be particularly sensitive and are shriveled beyond recognition.

Below is a perfect example of stippling from damaged stomata.
As the damage progresses, actual holes appear.
This rounded hill has no reds or oranges - and it should! The maples are especially likely to drop their leaves early, which accounts for all the bare branches.

Here is the largest rock garden - it has lovely specimens in the nooks and crannies.
Here is a splendidly revealing series of photos from the same grouping of an exotic sumac.
The progression of gaseous poisoning is evident in the early to late growth pattern.


The park has many varieties of rhododendron, but viewed closely, the leaves indicate a poor prognosis.
These are more azaleas, in really terrible, terminal condition.



Even the brightest red foliage to be found is pockmarked.





This is definitely blooming out of sequence, a primula, one of the earliest flowering SPRING plants which loves boggy environs. Above, the foliage is shriveled.


This is some sort of cyclamen. I don't know if the leaves are supposed to have such distinctive markings but they are beautiful.
Notice, a hanging begonia at the park office. The slightest frost, and this plant would be completely dead. So why are so many leaves on the ground instead of on trees and shrubs?

The park has many areas of ferns, which have interesting layers of damage. The oldest growth from the beginning of the season is almost obliterated in many spots, and then there is more recent, tiny spurts of light green growth standing above. I don't completely understand and certainly can't prove anything, but I do know that we experience higher episodes of pollution on hotter days, as the emissions react to stronger UV radiation.
This would be such a lovely scene if it were in November instead of October.

An older maidenhair fern is in the photo above, and below, a newer green whorl rises on top of the damaged first growth. The plants are trying so hard to survive!



Varying degrees of singing depending on exposure over time

Everywhere, it was easy to find fallen branches and twigs that didn't have a bit of bark showing, every bit of the surface covered in lichen.
The oak leaves above were on baby saplings only a foot high.


The conifers are turning yellow rapidly, just in the past few weeks. If it keeps up, most will be bare by the end of the winter.

This hardy orange tree has browned fruit and curled leaves.

The witchhazel leaves go from bad to worse.

The park has so many well-tended beds, with practically no weeds, only charming planted ground-covers that all, alas, have the same symptoms as the larger trees.




Even the potted geranium, that generally thrive and bloom their best in late autumn, have miniature, speckled leaves.

I crept under the branches of this magnificent dawn redwood.
The water lily pads in the pond here look as bad or worse than those at Wit's End.



Conifers are putting all of their energy into reproducing - they have more cones than needles, which are yellowing. By the time they have yellow needles, they are deader than the typical green, cut Christmas tree.

The park office has rock gardens in teak containers. I love the bonsai!

These are self-sown beech leaves.


It's so peculiar to me that people don't realize these branches are prematurely bare.

And the leaves are so far from the glossy colors they should be.

Oops that's it for plants! After the opera, we met up with family and friends for a luscious gourmet dinner at the Pluckemin Inn! Enjoy it while it lasts...
