It is never enjoyable to see the damage that mankind is causing to our ecosystem. It is probably why people ignore it. It was like watching a train wreck in slow motion with those poor trees dying a slow and agonizing death. Your article is definitely an eye opener and certainly left me with even more concern than ever for the future of this home we call Earth. I cannot help but wonder what will be left for my grandchildren. I know now how you felt after reading my article. Yikes indeed. I came across this interesting blog about eucalyptus trees dying in Australia, which examines every possible cause from insects to disease to too many fires to too few fires, to lime from road-making:

http://gyrovague.wordpress.com/2010/09/21/receding-gums-what-ails-australias-iconic-trees/

"Which makes it all the more alarming that across the country, swathes of gum trees are dying without obvious cause. In forests from Western Australia to the island state of Tasmania, trees that should be living for more than 400 years are mysteriously dying before reaching their 100th birthday...
Meek’s team has confirmed that 187,000 hectares of eucalyptus forest are dying from BMAD, but the real figure could much higher. In New South Wales alone, up to 2.5 million hectares of forest are wasting away.
However, Vic Jurskis of the Institute of Foresters of Australia says tree foliage can start looking sick before any sign of psyllids or bell miner outbreaks – or, indeed, any other obvious factor that might kill the trees. So it looks like the problem runs deeper than bell miners."Gail Zawackihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01800944469843206253noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5549306427964459740.post-21733974452523074272011-02-25T03:34:44.233-05:002011-02-25T03:34:44.233-05:00Re: Eucalypts dying in south western Australia.
E...Re: Eucalypts dying in south western Australia.

Eucalypt decline in south western Western Australia is primarily caused by two factors. These being lack of water and land management.

Most native trees and shrubs in Australia have evolved to need the extreme heat to release their seeds from extremely tough protective containers. They have also evolved to require certain chemicals in the smoke to trigger germination.

I'm not disputing or supporting the effect of pollution on plants but feel it important to point out that in south west Australia these are not currently significant factors to Eucalypt decline.

In addition: the horrific fires in south eastern Australia in 2010 were due to extreme weather conditions after several years prolific growth of understory plants. With enough heat the firefront in Australian forests is literally burning on air. See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aLcLkSxQ6PQ (short video) for more information.

In Victoria in 2010 the firefronts were measured travelling at over 140 kph. Spot fires in Australia will typically occur several kilometers ahead of the main fire due to wind and large ambers. I remember the catastrophic fire warning for the Victorian fires was 300%. Yes - the risk was given as a 300% chance of catastrophic bushfires.

For an interesting (albeit horrifying) look at the large scale effect of land management in Western Australia take a look at http://maps.google.com/maps?t=k&hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll=-29.788182,120.18388&spn=30.529649,33.662109&z=5

You can clearly see the large area of land cleared over many years of what I consider criminal land management policies. The documentary "A Million Acres a Year" shows the devastation caused close up.

Peace,
Matt.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5549306427964459740.post-4961442508510730722011-02-24T15:53:02.890-05:002011-02-24T15:53:02.890-05:00My best friend pointed out tree deaths he attribut...My best friend pointed out tree deaths he attributed to airborne pollution almost 20 years ago. Even then it was nonexistent 'bugs' causing loss of bark in trees in the city parks.
Air pollution is a factor in countless cases of asthma - though particulate matter is the villain in reports I've seen.
I'm one of those nasty people who do NOT subscribe to Anthropological Global Warming, however. When you use ideas to predict the future based on hindcasting, you are still dealing with an essentially untestable hypothesis.
If you have any interest in that, my file 'Climate in Contention' contains entries from the fray. Even Grist's comprehensive 'rebuttal' of the meme 'denierism' will make the list.
That's just an aside, however. You are running with a story that needs to be told.
Still...chemtrails people have you licked for attention paid to the topic of air pollution.opithttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01621946866211400380noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5549306427964459740.post-79758290467376302712011-02-24T12:04:48.850-05:002011-02-24T12:04:48.850-05:00As Gail is not God

That guy who owned the farmhouse who had to cut down his dead and dying trees, and blamed it on the rock salt.

Envision the movie The Road. It's a bleak landscape, devoid of life and vitality. Dead trees, the only trees that are left, are plummeting to the earth in great numbers and the remaining humans are struggling to survive, often resorting to desperate measures that strip them of any remaining morals or dignity. One struggling human meets another on the road and asks what may have led to this catastrophe. The other responds, "It was the rock salt," then proceeds to kill and eat the guy who was so bold as to ask the now irrelevant question.

Sick, I know, but so was that guy's response to you. It was sick, and he is sick, we are sick, just as the trees are sick.....but the major difference is that the trees didn't have a choice. We, apparently did, and we chose wrong. I don't mean you and me, but incrementally, over time, humankind defecated on the hand that always fed it, and now that hand is suffocating and withering, and humankind will soon join in that prognosis, if it hasn't already.Morocco Bamanoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5549306427964459740.post-49667072224089800712011-02-23T23:00:13.722-05:002011-02-23T23:00:13.722-05:00People don't see what's in front of their ...People don't see what's in front of their eyes.
